Bettine Vriesekoop, former table tennis player and two times European champion, has a special relationship with China, the country about which she has written three books. On more than one occasion she came off worst against a player from that country. After her sporting career, Vriesekoop spent three years working as a correspondent in China for the newspaper NRC Handelsblad. She is currently writing her fourth book, which describes this period. Vriesekoop, an expert on China, will be giving a lecture about China for the MVV Academy, a business meeting which precedes each home match of the MVV Maastricht football club.

Cultural Introduction is an initiative by the University of Maastricht to raise the cultural awareness of its new international staff members. The introduction day will be organised in collaboration with the Maastricht Region International Service Desk of the City of Maastricht. New employees will learn about the culture of the Netherlands and Limburg as well as having the chance to get to know each another. The University of Maastricht is the most internationally oriented university in the Netherlands. No less than two-fifths of the 13,000 students are international students. Of the 3,500 teaching staff, more than a thousand come from oversees.

The Euregional Sustainable Building Conference 2010 is a three-day Euregional meeting on the subject of sustainable building. A major theme of the conference will be the practice of sustainable building. The programme includes a number of interesting excursions to projects in the Euregion which stand out as a result of their level of sustainability, such as The District of Tomorrow, located on the Avantis site.

Catch that Coach! is the follow-up to the successful careers event Catch that Train! Catch that Coach! enables students and alumni from the University of Maastricht to meet potential employers and important players within the European job market. The main theme of the conference is the future of graduates and young professionals with a university degree and their career prospects in Europe. Attending the event will be Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates and alumni from the University of Maastricht, as well as companies, organisations and institutes that play a key role in the European job market.

On 8 October, members of the King Willem I Circle will visit the city for a private meeting under the guidance of Mr. Fernand Jadoul, Honorary Consul of Luxemburg in Maastricht. King Willem I was one of the monarchs to bring Luxemburg and Limburg under one administration, albeit temporarily. He also improved the relationship between the private and public sectors.

Together with the City of Maastricht, the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA) is organising the workshop entitled Toolbox for Municipalities. Although Dutch municipalities carry out activities at local level, a European dimension is increasingly being added to their policies.

The conference ‘Urban Connections’ focuses on regional cooperation via economic, social and physical infrastructures.

Together with the City of Maastricht, the Foundation for the Preservation of Small Landscape Elements (Stichting Instandhoudling Kleine Landschapselementen - IKL) is organising the conference ‘Landscape in Support of the Capital of Culture’ (Landschap Drager Culturele Hoofdstad). The purpose of the meeting at Hartmann Contractors is to incorporate the landscape of the Euregion in the Via 2018 bid book, the memorandum accompanying Maastricht’s candidacy for the title of European Capital of Culture 2018.

Imagination 2010 is an international event for professional photographers, video-makers and creative types, organised by the Sir Lyone Foundation. The foundation is an initiative by conference organiser Niels Klinkhamer and photographer Roy Wanders and was set up to promote international creativity in images. Imagination 2010 is the first event of a series of international conferences, symposia and exhibitions in Maastricht initiated by the Sir Lyone Foundation.

Euregio~Taalregio (Euregion~Language region) is a Euregional language conference organised by the translation agency ISA Vertaal in collaboration with the City of Maastricht. Businesses, educational institutions and government authorities will meet to discuss the cultural differences and language barriers they encounter when conducting cross-border business in the Euregion.
